Why Your Furnace Could be Blowing Cold Air

You listen to your furnace turn on and you’re ready for a comfortable blast of warm air, but instead all you get is cool air blowing. That’s not what you want when it’s cold outside!

There are a couple reasons why your heating system could be giving off cold air. Stevenson Service Experts is here with a few of them to help you detect the culprit.

  • Thermostat

It could seem silly, but the thermostat is the first thing you want to look at. It’s the starting point for any heating technician, too. Verify the system is set to “auto instead of “on.” If the thermostat is set to “on” then your heating system will blow constantly, even when it isn’t really heating the air being produced, thus blasting cold air. Turning it to “auto” will make sure the heating equipment only blows when it’s truly heating the air to keep your home warm and cozy.

  • Air Filter

Typically air filters need to be changed every month to prevent them from getting dirty and clogged. If air filters aren’t replaced often enough, the soiled air filter may restrict airflow into your furnace. If this happens, it can overheat your furnace, causing the system to stop heating as a safety precaution.

  • Duct Work

If your duct work includes leaks, connection issues, or was not designed correctly, it could permit warm air from the heating equipment to escape out. This would not only cause your heating equipment to give off cold air, it could significantly run up your utility bills since your furnace is heating non-living space, and will have to work more to keep your home at the desired temperature.

There are several other reasons that your heating system could produce cold air. Call Stevenson Service Experts today and we’ll send a technician to diagnose your problem and get your home warm and cozy again in no time.
