Holiday Safety: Furnace Repair and Maintenance for the Holidays

Published on December 15, 2015
Furnace Repair For the Holidays

The holidays are a time of joy, celebration, and gathering with friends and family. You’ve prepared the food, wrapped the gifts and decorated your home to give your guests a memorable holiday to remember. While you’re creating new memories this season, a furnace repair and a few simple tips will ensure you’re making those memories in a safe and toasty warm home.

  1. Adjust your thermostat: If you’ll be hosting this holiday, think about turning your thermostat down before guests arrive. A huge crowd, warm oven, and perhaps some spiked hot cocoa can make the room feel stuffy. Preemptively reducing the thermostat can help keep everyone comfortable all through the evening.

If you’ll be going on a trip for the holidays, lower your thermostat to keep energy costs down. Do not turn your system off entirely, though, as this could cause your pipes or appliances to freeze.

  2. Check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors: With all the holiday lights, decorations, and cozy fireplaces running, December and January are dangerous times of year for home fires. The U.S. Fire Administration says that December is peak month for home candle fires. To ensure your family’s safety, you should use the test button on your smoke detector every month and the batteries should be changed at least one time a year to make sure your alarms are working properly.

The arrival of winter also means the furnace is on and windows are locked. If your furnace needs to be repaired, your system could be emitting carbon monoxide fumes into your home. If your carbon monoxide detector does go off, leave the house immediately and call professionals to check your system’s efficiency. And if anyone is feeling funny or nauseous, call the fire department and make your way to an area with fresh air.

  3. Schedule a furnace inspection: We all know that along with the magic of the holidays comes the holiday stress. Whether you are entertaining in your home or traveling for the holidays, a furnace inspection and regular maintenance will give you the invaluable gift of peace of mind. A well maintained furnace runs more efficiently and more safely.

The holidays are the most magical time of the year and with a few simple precautions you can make sure you’re shaping nothing but the best memories. Use our convenient online scheduler today to set up your furnace repair or maintenance and help ensure a safe holiday season. There’s truly no place like a cozy home for the holidays.
